Grab3D

Three dimensional computer graphics are becoming increasingly sophisticated but more and more time is being spent trying to create computer models that "look real". You only have to look at the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park to see that these models can be very convincing, but we're still at the same stage as canvas painting was before photography was invented. It takes skill and considerable time to create a painting that looks as real as a photograph, and the same is true of a 3D computer model. What if you could capture moving real-life objects, like people for instance, directly into your computer as moving 3D models?

We recently won a Smart award from the DTI to develop a prototype 3D capture system that will allow full-colour moving objects to be digitised with a very high degree of realism. A filmmaker, for instance, will be able to insert an actor into a computer generated scene in the same way as any other 3D model. Existing techniques such as laser scanning don't work for moving objects, and manually modeling a real-life object can take weeks.

Imagine a computer game set in a 3D world with real actors. Or going internet shopping and being able to closely examine an ornament from any angle. We're moving away from jaggy cartoon-like 3D graphics and making it look real, with lighting and shadow effects that rival big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. Grab3D will produce photo-quality frame-by-frame 3D models in a few hours instead of the weeks or months that it usually takes.
